Gematria is a system of assigning numerical values to words and phrases, most notably in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. It is traditionally used to study the relationships between a word's numerical equivalent and its meaning. It has been used at times in the Christian tradition, mostly for theological or theological-mystical purposes. However, it is sometimes used more broadly for certain practical purposes such as numerology or for creative expression.

At its core, gematria uses the letters of an alphabet (usually Hebrew) to represent numerical equivalents of words or phrases. Each letter typically has an assigned numerical value, which can be calculated from its position in the alphabet. For example, in the Hebrew alphabet, Aleph would have a value of one while Tav would have a value of 400. Depending on the system being used, these values will be further divided into smaller levels of magnitude (1/10ths, 1/100ths etc.) or even further combined into larger series or intervals.

Once these numerical equivalents are established, they are then applied to different words or phrases to discover hidden meanings behind their relationships with one another. For example, if two words have the same numerical value they may be seen as being related by virtue of this similarity. Gematria also looks at correspondences between various names and titles that can relate to one another through their numeric values.

In Jewish culture for instance it is closely connected with kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), where well-known allegorical concords between names such as God's four letter name – "YHVH" – are studied using gematria principles and related mathematical calculations; drawing connections between concepts often unconnected within other forms of discourse around religious scripture and philosophical topics alike. The relationship between numerology and astrology has also often been elucidated with gematria as a basis for evidence as both recognize many of the same underlying cosmic principles that can be further illuminated through gematria exploration.
